Dean Murray was born just outside of Washington D.C. and currently lives in East Patchogue, NY with his dog Pete.
In 1985, Dean graduated, with honors, from the Broadcast Institute of Maryland and for the next 10 years, he was involved in all aspects of radio and television news throughout Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York. During that period, Dean did the morning & evening rush hour traffic reports from the skies over Baltimore, before moving to Pennsylvania where he covered the legislature at the Pennsylvania State Capital for over 100 radio stations and spent 5 years on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Associated Press. While living in Pennsylvania, Dean played 5 seasons of semi-pro football with the Chambersburg Cardinals and York Lions.
Seeking other opportunities, in 1994, Dean came to Long Island as an Advertising Sales Rep for TCI Cable. In three short years, Dean took the entrepreneurial leap and started his own Advertising Agency – D & S Advertising, Inc. The company published the “Long Island Job Finder” employment newspaper & website and the “Long Island Fugitive Finder” magazine & website. Through these publications/websites, Dean built a successful business that employed quite a few people while also having the satisfaction of knowing that he was helping his fellow Long Islanders. These publications/websites have helped people find new jobs and new careers and have kept our communities safe by helping law enforcement to get criminals off the streets. While the publications have ceased, the websites are still active and continue to help Long Islanders.
Dean was first elected to serve in the NYS Assembly in a special election in February of 2010 and served through 2012. Following a 2 year break, Dean returned to the NYS Assembly in 2015 and served through the end of 2018. While in the Assembly, Dean led the fight to repeal the MTA payroll tax, eliminate the salt-water fishing license fee, pass the largest middle class tax cut in decades and adopt the I-STOP program to help fight the serious problem of prescription drug abuse. In 2022, Dean was elected to return to Albany to represent the people of the 3rd District of the NYS Senate. While in the Senate, Dean has led the charge to ensure that Long Island get’s it’s fair share of funding for public education while also being a strong voice for parental rights, economic growth and keeping our environment clean and healthy. Dean has also adamantly supported law enforcement and fought tirelessly for crime victims and their loved ones.
In addition to his governmental service, Dean has shown a commitment to his community in various other ways. For several years, Dean did the play-by-play broadcasts for High School Football on WALK-AM. He’s an active member of several Chamber of Commerce chapters throughout Suffolk County, served on the board of the “Patchogue Medford Youth & Community Services” organization, is a member of the “Focus East Patchogue Civic Organization”, was a member of the “Suffolk County Police Reserves” and also served on the “Suffolk County Workforce Investment Board”.
Dean isn’t the only one in his family that has made a commitment to community and country. He is extremely proud of his son, Anthony Dean Murray, who served 6 years in the Maryland Air National Guard, completing tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
